All Fans Are Invited to Join as the Additional Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: I also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're not alone. A host of celebrated admirers have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy nominees.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos often feature them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Historic Nod

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes track departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international audience.

But the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
